Leeds returns to the English Premier League

The defeat of second-placed West Brom group against Huddersfield on July 17, helped Leeds gain first place in the First Division in England this season.

After 16 years of absence, Leeds will play in the English Premier League from the 2020-2021 season. The teachers and students of Marcelo Bielsa have 87 points after 44 games, five points more than West Brom.

With West Brom only one game left, Leeds secured a place in the first place. Third place is Brentford with 81 points. Brentford will follow Leeds into relegation if they win the remaining two matches.

West Brom lost the right to self-relegation with a 1-2 defeat at Huddersfield, although they took the lead for most of the season. The hosts opened the scoring thanks to Chris Willock in the fourth minute, the earliest match in round 45.

They finished the 2002-2003 season in 15th place. By the 2003-2004 season, Leeds sold Harry Kewell and Olivier Dacourt. Although there are still some good players like Mark Viduka, Alan Smith, Jermaine Pennant, or James Milner, they are still 19th and relegated to Leicester and Wolverhampton.

Leeds is rich in tradition, having won the English champions three times, the most recent was the 1991-1992 season. They had suddenly reached the semi-finals of the Champions League 2000-2001, stopping in front of Valencia. But the club from West Yorkshire County had to play in the Second Division (EFL League One) for three seasons, from 2007 to 2010.
